Solar panels at the Bengough pool.

Installation of Bengough's solar pool heating system in September, 2004. This system is designed to provide one hundred per cent of the required pool heat. The pool operates from late June to late August. The community of Bengough celebrated their Centennial homecoming reunion with the official opening of the newly installed solar heating system for their outdoor swimming pool.

Pilot Project:

When Bengough's natural gas bill for the pool went over $3,000 a month, they started looking at alternative energy. They called to ask for information on solar heating. The gas boilers are still connected, but they don't expect to use them any more unless there is a prolonged period of cloudy weather combined with low temperatures during the summer months when the pool is operating.

Saskatchewan municipalities operate more than 100 outdoor swimming pools.

"There is more than enough solar energy for pool owners across Canada to heat their pools without a back-up heater from May through September."

ecoENERGY for Renewable Heat - Provides incentives for solar water and air installations in the industrial, commercial and institutional sectors; helps develop renewable thermal energy industry capacity; and contributes to clean air by displacing fossil fuel-based energy use for space heating and cooling and water heating.

The R.M. of Hudson Bay #394 has recently retrofitted their existing office fixtures from 40 Watt, T12 fluorescent lighting to 32 watt, T8 electronic lighting. Not only have they saved approximately 3,385 kWh/year at a cost savings of $280.00 annually, which translates into a 58% rate of return, they have improved the quality of the workplace for employees! R.M. Administrator Linda Purves writes; "Our previous lighting was very dull and steadily flickered, causing office staff eye strain problems... Now the lighting is very bright and steady so there are no eye strain problems."

The RM also replaced T12 fluorescent lighting in their shop to Metal Halide Fixtures. Linda wrote; "In our shop, we had very poor lighting that was up high and very dull making it hard for our maintenance personnel to work ... the new 400 watt Hi Bay lights are very bright and have made a significant difference..."
